Month by month guide: January
Vegetables, Herbs and Fruit.

Vegetables to put on the table this month:
Jerusalem Artichoke
Brussel Sprouts
Cabbage
Carrots
Chicory
Leek
Onion
Parsnip
Radish
Salsify
Scorzonera
Swede

What to do in the allotment in January? Apart from harvesting the above.

General Tasks
Tidy, mend and do, order seeds, feed the birds.

Vegetables:
Plant Rhubarb and mulch with strawy manure.
Cover established Rhubarb as above. Cover some crowns with bucket etc for early forced.
Sow early peas in sheltered spot.
Sow early Broad Beans

Shallots can be planted this month on well drained soil.

Herbs:
Plan Herbs as required and where.
Sunny south facing ideal.

Fruit:
Inspect stored fruit and chuck out rotters.
Check ties and stakes.
Continue pruning.
Take Blackcurrant cuttings.
Remove deadwood.
